Welcome to a roundup of Retro Ramble related news.
Jester’s Dead (to Jerry Bruckheimer)
Like it or not, Top Gun 2 is actively shooting (for a 2020 summer release). Both Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer are returning. However one surviving cast member won’t be returning, that being RR Legend Michael Ironside. If you listened to our Starship Troopers episode, you’ll know our love for the gravelly-voiced character actor. Apparently, he and producer fell out a few years ago when Ironside turned down a role. As much as we love him and enjoy seeing him on screen, it seems like the right choice. To have an elderly Top Gun trainer appear in this belated sequel would feel like extreme fan service – a bit like Edward James Olmos in Blade Runner 2049.
Solo with Harrison Ford
In an amazing what-if, some intelligent chap, known as Derpfakes, has given us a glimpse of what this year’s Solo film could have looked like if it starred Harrison Ford in his prime. Using facial mapping software, actor Alden Ehrenreich is swapped out for the original (and best) Solo. The effect is a little creepy but impressive for something fan-made.
The Kid Who Would Be King Trailer
We’re big fans of Joe Cornish (aka of Adam and Joe fame) and it’s been a long time since his cult directorial debut, Attack The Block in 2011. Cornish’s name always seems to appear on director wishlists for Hollywood franchise fare over the years – (Star Trek Beyond, Kong: Skull Island, Die Hard 5, X: Men’s Gambit) so it’s refreshing to see him finally pick something original and distinctly British. The Kid Who Would Be King looks like a fun family adventure film, something we don’t see enough of these days. Fingers crossed it’s worth the wait.
Rambo: Last Blood
Despite being ten years since the last loud and bloody instalment, Sylvester Stallone has been teasing first imagery and the title of his final Rambo film. Fittingly titled Rambo: Last Blood, the film will see the warrior give up peaceful retirement on a ranch to take on a Mexican cartel. We’re definitely getting Logan-inspired vibes on this one.
That’s all for this week, have a great weekend all!
